Open Sourced: Plastic Waste Into Custom Products
What if we could not only remove more plastic waste from the environment, but we could salvage that waste and create useful, durable, and intelligently design products from those plastics?
Enter, Precious Plastic, a global community whose mission it is to work towards a solution to plastic pollution. Precious Plastic helps you turn plastic waste into something useful. They provide knowledge, tools and techniques, all for free and shared online to help people all over the world convert plastic collected from the environment into a creation of their own.
The plans they offer are designed in such a way that anyone with basic building knowledge and access to a local hardware store could build a workshop relatively easily. More recently, they have released plans for a mobile version which can be built within a 40 foot shipping container or a trailer of similar dimensions. This means that their workshops will be more accessible and mobile than ever before, reaching new demographics and spreading more knowledge.
For those who don’t have the means to build out a workstation, they can check out Precious Plastic’s interactive map to find a workstation nearby from which they can work, or to connect with people in their community who are interested in building a shop.
Precious Plastic provides a compelling platform for collaborative efforts between nonprofits and businesses interested in helping curb plastic pollution and takes the idea of volunteer trash collection to a whole new level.
